Electronic ID (e-ID) is how you log in to most Norwegian public services. Without an e-ID, daily life becomes harder: taxes, NAV, UDI, school portals, and digital mail often require secure login.
Your main options
- MinID (public e-ID, lower security level than BankID for some services)
- BankID (issued by your bank; widely accepted; often required for “full access”)
- Buypass and Commfides (paid e-IDs used by some users)
Key requirement: you need a Norwegian identification number
To obtain an e-ID, you typically need a national identity number or D-number. If you do not have one yet, start with the Tax Administration process and keep your documentation organized.
Immigrant/single-parent reality check
- Use your own phone number and email for registrations (do not borrow a friend’s contact details).
- If you are locked out of digital services, your case can stall—benefits, appointments, and deadlines.
- Get a basic e-ID first (MinID if available), then work toward BankID once you have stable banking.
What you can do with e-ID
- Log in to public portals via ID-porten
- Check messages, applications, and deadlines
- Use digital signature services in many workflows
Do Better Norge quick plan
- Get your ID number (D-number/national identity number).
- Get MinID as early access (when possible).
- Open a bank account and ask about BankID requirements.
- Set up Digital Postkasse so you don’t miss official letters.

Do Better Norge note: Digital access is not “nice to have” in Norway—it is infrastructure. Treat e-ID like rent: if it fails, everything downstream becomes unstable.
